The Cape Sounio, where the temple of Poseidon is located, 9 km from the port of Lavrion, is one of the most important monuments of Attica with high traffic throughout the year. The temple is Doric style, built in 440 BC, at in the time of the golden age of Pericles. Cape Sounio was inhabited in prehistoric times. According to mythology it is connected with the death of Aegeus, King of Athens, who saw the black sails from the ship of his son Theseus’, thought he was killed by the Minotaur and drowned in the sea which named “Aegean Sea“. It is also noted that the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens is 70 km away from the port of Lavrion.
