SANTORINI Port of Santorini The island of Thira (Santorini) is located in the island complex of Cyclades, 128n.m from Piraeus.Thira island has two anchorages at Athinios bay and Fira bay for the cruise ships approach. One of the peculiarities of Thira harbor facilities is the fact that cruise ships do not have the ability to stay at any existing port infrastructure and remain at anchorage. The cruise ships at Athenios and Fira bays remain at the anchorage, therefore the passengers are transported ashore by boats of Thira Boatmen Association. Athinios port is the main port of the island of Thira and is geographically located on the west side of the island. It is 10 km from the International Airport of Thira and 8 km from its capital town, Fira. At Athinios port, in cooperation with the second port of Fira, the cruise passengers are disembarked from the cruise ships to the island, by the boats of the Boatmen association. In the bay of Fira, the cruise passenger’s transportation from the staircase of Fira to the traditional town of Fira takes place by car or by cable car. Cruise passengers can visit the rest of the island by tourist buses, private vehicles, the local bus network and taxis. In the ports of Athenios and Fira, a fully integrated security system operates under an approved Port Facility Security Plan in accordance with the ISPS Security Code. The Municipal Port Fund of Thira has developed in recent years an electronic cruise ship management platform (Berth Allocation System), that has helped to relieve the traffic caused by the simultaneous arrivals and departures of ships. The model of the system is that it works fully electronically, enabling users (cruise companies - DLTs) to plan the arrivals and departures of cruise ships in the best possible way.
