Corfu is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece, perhaps the greenest island with densest vegetation. It is an island with a great history, more than 3000 years. Corfu was never conquered by the Ottomans, and its culture is inextricably linked to Venice and England. History, culture and tradition are presented in a series of Museums and Collections. The cruise passengers will have the opportunity to wander from mythology till today starting from the old town of Corfu, which is bounded by the Old and New Fortresses. Narrow streets, the tallest two-storey roof-tiled buildings, old churches and hagiographies of great value, and several Museums, justify the reasons that Corfu city is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In the old town walk visitors will meet: • Spianada Square which is the largest in Greece, opposite the Old Fortress and the old harbor. They will walk on Liston Street, the most famous pedestrian area of Corfu, and will admire the old mansions. • The Catholic Cathedral of San Giacomo of the 16th century. • The churches of St. John and the Virgin Mary of the Foreigners, which host several religious heirlooms by the most famous local artists. • The church of Saint Spyridon, patron saint of the island, one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Corfu. • The Asian Art Museum with 15,000 Asian art collections of the Far East and India. • The Archaeological Museum of Corfu, which hosts findings from all over the island, mainly from the archaeological site of Paleopolis. Within walking distance of the city is the Mon Repos Museum, a palace built in 1830 when the island was under British domination, and Ponticonissi with the Monastery of Ag. Vlaherna, located below the Kanoni area. Outside the city is the Achilleion Palace, built in 1890 by the Queen Elizabeth of Austro-Hungarian Empire, and nowadays it operates as a Museum.
