Kalamata is the capital of the prefecture of Messinia and a harbor of the homonymous bay, with a long historical route. It occupies the position of ancient Pharae, a city inhabited by the Prehistoric and Roman times. Its modern name, Kalamata, took it from an old Byzantine monastery (probably in the place of the Castle), which was dedicated to Panagia Kalomata. Today Kalamata is a modern city with remarkable economic, spiritual and artistic activity.
At the end of the 19th century, the harbor, which has been operating until today, is being built, and the city has significant growth. It comes into contact with west European culture and creates an important cultural heritage.
The Municipal Port Authority of Kalamata, in its effort to better inform the visitors of the cruise on the history, culture, tradition and natural beauties of the place, created the tourist guide that follows with photographs, texts and maps. There are archaeological sites, museums, galleries, beaches, traditional products and everything else that is of interest to cruise passengers.
There are numerous activities in the tourist guide, such as cycling, mountaineering, etc. and suggestions for one-day excursions.
